1.)ELABLRL4 The student employs a variety of writing genres to demonstrate a comprehensive grasp of significant ideas in selected literary works. The student composes essays, narratives, poems, or technical documents.
I THINK THAT THIS STANDARD IS SAYING THAT WE KNOW HOW TO WRITE ESSAYS, POEMS, WRITINGS, AND DOCUMENTS TO EXPRESS OUR IDEAS ON SELECTED LITERARY WORKS.
2.)The rhyme scheme that Spenser and Shakespeare uses is significant. Each set of pairs serve a special purpose. The first 4 lines ask a question. The next 4 lines is that same question but from a different point of vew. The next 4 lines is the turn, which shifts the focus of the poem. The last 2 lines serve as the conclusion. I personally find Spenser's method easier. He uses the a method called ABAB BCBC DCDC EE. It looks as if he uses the 2nd line of every pair's rhyme and converts it into the next pair. Which explains why B is used with A and C and C used with B and D. Leaving E to be the conclusion of the poem.
Shakespeare uses ABAB CDCD EFEF GG. Shakespeare does the complete opposite of Spenser. He takes every other line and make them rhyme. And in the next pair he does the same. Like Spenser's G is left as the concluding lines, or the end of the poem.
3.) Sonnet 15: William Shakespeare: In the first 4 lines of the poem it's asking "Should i compare you to a summer's day." And then it basically listed a couple of reasons why(Your more beautiful and cool while summer can be rough at times and it doesnt really last that long). 'The next 4 lines gives you more reasons why summer isn't always a good thing. (The sun is uncomfortable it could rain or get cloudy. Everything beautiful fades away with the season). The turning point of the poem says "The beauty within you will last forever; you'll always have it. Death can never own you. You'll always live through this poem, for it will always be here." The conclusion states that as long as people are alive and can read this sonnet the poem and your beauty will always be.
Sonnet 30: Edmund Spenser: The first 4 lines are saying that the more he wants her the colder she gets. The next 4 line are saying that the colder she gets the more he wants her. The turning point of the poem is saying that "Fire freezes ice and solid ice starts a fire. Isn't it crazy how this goes against the laws of nature." The concluding lines are saying the power of love is so strong that it can change the laws of nature.
4.) William Shakespeare: My Mistress' Eyes Are Nothing Like The Sun: The first 4 lines state that his lady's eye are dull, herlips arent red, her skin is pale, and her hair is wirey black. The next 4 lines states that her cheeks arent rosey and that perfume smells better than her breath. The turning point of the poem says that music is sounds better than her voice and that he has never seen beauty go until he met her. The concluding lines says that his love for her is special and that she really is beautiful.
Edmund Spenser: Sonnet 5: The first 4 lines are asking what could he compare his lady's eyes to for there is nothing on earth that resembles their attraction. The next 4 lines are saying that he cant compare her eyes to the sun or moon because her eyes shine at night and they never change and he cant compare her eyes to the stars or fire because her eyes are pure and sooner or later that fire burns out but her eyes always shine. The next 4 lines says that he can't compare her eyes to lightening or diamonds because they chase softly and that he can't compare her eyes to crystal or glass because they aren't pretty enough. The last lines says thats her eyes are as powerful to him as God.
5.) Finished
6.)Glamour: Delencia Wingfield:
Would Glamour a wonderful thing to possess?
You’d stand out more and attract the sun’s glare
You’d walk with more pride and finesse
It’s truly a trait that outwears
I would enjoy such a significant gift
No one would be able to look away
My spirit would receive a magnificent uplift
And you’d praise my glamour every single day
Attitude could become bittery
Glamour could be a pain and cause depression
It could start to cause insanity
Only God will know just how many times your heart will be broken
As, Glamorous as can be
Enjoy the stares of jealous eyes
7.)ELABLRL1 The student demonstrates comprehension by identifying evidence (i.e., examples of diction, imagery, point of view, figurative language, symbolism, plot events, main ideas, and characteristics) in a variety of texts representative of different genres (i.e., poetry, prose [short story, novel, essay, editorial, biography], and drama) and using this evidence as the basis for interpretation. ELABLRL3 The student deepens understanding of literary works by relating them to their contemporary context or historical background, as well as to works from other time periods. ELABLRL4 The student employs a variety of writing genres to demonstrate a comprehensive grasp of significant ideas in selected literary works. The student composes essays, narratives, poems, or technical documents.
I feel as if i've met all of these standards because i was able to analyze a sonnet written in the Renaissance time period and understand just what they were talking about. I was even able to write my very own sonnet. I was able to tell when a switch of point of view was made and convert that skill inside of my very own sonnet.

FAITH
In a small town, known as Cecily, there lived the Walker family, Julianne and Thomas. Julianne was expecting a baby girl in 2 weeks. The Walkers were very happy. They looked forward to having a little house guest.
One day as Thomas was out in the yard, he heard Julianne screaming. Thomas bolted toward the house. As he approached the house, he was stopped by the sight of his wife. Julianne was standing at the door with her bags, panting. “The baby is coming!”
She screamed. Thomas immediately led Julianne to the car and they drove to the hospital.
After 13 hours of pain and 3 complications, the baby was finally born. They named her Faith
A week had gone by since Julianne had Faith. The Walkers were trying to adapt to the new life of parenting. Faith would cry all day and night, but they knew exactly what to do to calm her down.
When Faith started school the Walkers were more than happy. They could finally finish some of the things that were postponed after Faith was born. Julianne went back to work and Thomas took on a 2nd job. He wanted the best for his family.
School wasn’t exactly what Faith hoped it to be. As the years went on school became very tough for Faith. The other kids would call her names and hit her.
One day, Faith ran into the house crying. Julianne overheard her and ran behind her to see what was wrong. Faith told her about how the other kids treated her at school. “Faith, you shouldn’t care what they say. Me and your father tell you how much we love you and how beautiful you look everyday.” Julianne said.
“That’s different. You’re supposed to say that. I’m your daughter. I just wish I was prettier.” Faith cried.
“Come on.” Julianne led Faith to the bathroom and sat her on the toilet stool. She took out her makeup and went to work.
The next day at school, everyone was in awe. Faith looked amazing. Her mom had straightened her hair out so that it flowed mystically and caked her face in foundation and blush. She even arched her eyebrows and gave her a certified manicure and pedicure. The other students couldn’t do anything but stare. Faith got nothing but compliments all day long.
As Faith left to go home, she overheard a commotion coming from around the corner. She quickly ran to see what was going on. What she saw terrified her. Teriana, a girl who along with Faith was the target of criticism from the students at her school, was being beaten into the concrete by a gang of girls. Faith tried to pull the girls off of her, but she was being held by 2 of the girls. They forced Faith to watch as her friend cried out and screamed for help. By the time Faith broke loose, it was too late. Teriana was lying on the concrete bleeding and unconscious. Faith quickly picked her up and took her friend to the hospital.
3 hours later, the doctor came out and told Faith that they had did all they could, but Teriana didn’t make it. Faith couldn’t believe it. She had watched the girls kill her friend. The doctor tried to get more information about Teriana from Faith, but she was in her own world. Faith couldn’t help but think that it could have been her. After Teriana’s parents arrived at the hospital, Faith left. She thought about what she had witnessed as she walked home.
Faith lied on her bed. She wished that there was something that she could have done to prevent what had happened. Anger was slowly building up inside of her. “I’m going to make it my duty to protect my city from being tortured by bullies.” Faith thought. She got up and went to the bathroom. She rinsed all of the makeup off of her face.
The next day, on her way to school, Faith was stopped by 2 of the girls who were involved in the beating of Teriana. “Awe, look it’s the Almighty Faith-Ann!” The girls snickered.
“Laugh all you want. This afternoon I’m going to tell the police what you did to Teriana. Then I’m going to laugh as they locked yall up.” Faith smiled.
“Girl, don’t be stupid. You aren’t gon’ say nothing.” One of the girls spat as she stepped forward.
“Watch me.” Faith said as she attempted to walk away. The girls grabbed Faith and began to beat her. Faith tried to fight back but she wasn’t strong enough. Faith’s vision began to fade in and out. She knew that it was now her who was going to buried next.
“If I die then they’ll get away with what they did. I can’t let that happen. I have to win so that Teriana get’s justice.” She thought. “I have to do this. For Teriana.”
As Faith neared her end she saw a plank lying in the grass next to her. She picked it up and swung it at the girls. They jumped back. Faith swung again. The plank hit one of girls in the head and the other in the arm. Faith attempted to swing again. The 2 girls ran off trying to escape Faith’s wreathed.
That afternoon, Faith did as she said she would. She marched down to the police station and told them of what she had witnessed. She also told them of her bravery. The officers congratulated her on her on her bravery and told her that they would take care of the girls.
Faith went to sleep smiling that night. She had taken a bad beating but in the end she had gotten justice for Teriana.
The next day Faith went and placed flowers on Teriana’s grave. She then sat next to it and began to tell Teriana about what she had done for her. The entire city was thankful for Faith’s bravery. She had become the new Cecily Hero!

Unit 1- Lit 12
2.) Beowulf was kind of hard to follow at first, but once you get deep into the story you understand it better. I found the story quite intriguing! It had certain aspects that kept you guessing and some that surprised you. Beowulf had this tone that just made you want to know how the story would end.
Pieces of the story that stuck out the most to me were his background history, battles, and his death. The battle against Grendall was one of my favorites. Grendall was introduced as this powerful and gruesome, fearless murderer, but when he faces Beowulf we see the coward side of him. What’s really unique about the Grendall battle was that Beowulf defeated him with his bare hands. They said Beowulf had the strength of 30 men but that was unbelievable.
I also enjoyed the battle against Grendall’s mom and Beowulf. The head of Beowulf’s sword couldn’t pierce her skin but an enchanted sword could. I admit Grendall’s mom got the best of Beowulf at first but in the end Beowulf succeeded. After defeating the mother, Beowulf’s finds Grendall’s body and cuts off his head as a gift for
Hrothgar. It’s a little much but Grendall was a very evil being.
I think that in the end, Beowulf may have been a little loony. He should have really thought about the situation before jumping so quick to fight the dragon. I believe his pride got the best of him. Maybe after his many years of victorious battles he began to take it to the head.
The Anglo-Saxons were unique people also. They may have been unorganized but they managed to hold on to England. I understand why the most important people of their time were the warriors and the bards. The warriors were desperately needed if they wanted to withhold their treasures and keep what was theirs.
Reading these passages really helped refresh my memory of ancient history and look back on the time of many brave heroes.
3.) The warriors and the bards who recited poetry and tales, that usually featured violence were most important to the Anglo-Saxons. Beowulf would have been very important in that time. He was a very successful warrior and he acted as a bard at certain moments when he gave speeches and such to the Danes.
I dont think the Anglo-Saxons would have approved of Beowulf fighting the dragon, however. The Saxons worshipped the dragon, fore it was the guardian of all treasures and warrior graves. In Beowulf, the dragon was guarding a heap of treasures, the Saxons saw the dragon as a very important religious figure.
4.) Like modern hero stories, Beowulf fights to protect the innocent from evil, but in the end Beowulf kind of turns to the other side and protects the villain. ---Beowulf fights to protect the Danes from Grendall and Grendall’s mom, but in the end of Beowulf fights the dragon because the dragon attacked the Geats after a thief stole the dragon’ scup. It looks as if Beowulf switched sides. Beowulf reminds me of Spiderman almost. At one point of time Spiderman was thought out to be a criminal by the authorities, but he is still rejoiced by the citizens of the city.
5.) After so many years of victorious battles, I think that Beowulf let his pride get the best of him. After all, the dragon had a justified reason for attacking the Geats. It was the thief who needed to be punished.
God could have been angry with Beowulf for what he had become. After a lifetime of battling evil, Beowulf could have forgotten the real reason why he had made it through so much. After all, Beowulf himself thought he had enraged God, by breaking a commandment. He may have broken the very first commandment “You shall have no other gods before me.” Beowulf seemed to have enjoyed the thrill of fighting so much that he had began to worship it almost or maybe since he had won so many battles, he may have thought of himself as a god.
6.) Beowulf helped me meet all of the standards, to say. I can identify evidence in a poet genre, relate literature to different periods, I can write in an organized fashion, and so forth. It isn’t necessary hard to do all of those things, but it isn’t easy either. You may be able to identify evidence in a poem but it may be hard for you to then use that evidence to relate the poem to things from different periods of time. Unit one, to me was more like a challenge. I had to challenge my mind to understand what I was I doing and what I reading. Completing this unit has taught me more than other literary assignments have in my earlier years.

ELABLRL3: The student deepens understanding of literary works by relating them to their contemporary context or historical background, as well as to works from other time periods.
My interpretation of the standard above would be: The student deeply understands literary work by relating works from other periods to today's work. I think that this standard is important to master because alot of work today can be traced back to other periods of time.

Georgia Performance Standards
The student demonstrates comprehension by identifying evidence (i.e., examples of diction, imagery, point of view, figurative language, symbolism, plot events and main ideas) in a variety of texts representative of different genres (i.e., poetry, prose [short story, novel, essay, editorial, biography], and drama) and using this evidence as the basis for interpretation.
My interpretation of the standard above would be: The student can interpret and comprehend the many different literary terms and use them in a variety of litereary genres. I find this standard very imporatant. You could use this standard to understand what you write or read.
